What is High Density EVA foam?

EVA is an abbreviation of Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate. It is one of the materials popularly known as expanded rubber of foam rubber. Besides its uses for costumes and props, EVA foam is also used as padding in sports equipment such as ski boots, bicycle saddles, hockey pads, boxing and MMA gloves and helmets, wakeboard and waterski boots, fishing rods and fishing-reel handles. The Foam is often used as a shock absorber, but in the creative industry, it is a valuable material for crafting the most amazing armors and props. Whether you need High Density or Low Density EVA foam depends on the hardness or sturdiness you desire. Minque Art & Cosplay has three types of High Density EVA foam for you to choose from:

  • The CF65 is more agile compared to the CF100, making it easier to use when making round shapes.
  • The CF100 is sturdier than the CF65, giving you much smoother results after dremeling your EVA foam.
  • The CF200 is even sturdier than the CF100, which allows it to retain its shape extremely well and ensures a much smoother finish. This also makes CF200 more durable.

How to use:

Depending on what kind of costume or prop you want to make, you choose the thickness of your High Density EVA foam. For tranquil-looking elf gear, a thin foam might be required, whereas the 10-millimeter-thick foam is perfect if you want to stomp around in homemade Space Marine armor. The 10-millimeter-thick foam is also perfect to strengthen parts of your build. Check out this list of EVA Foam properties:

  • Easily cuttable with a utility knife. With a little practice you can even cut beveled edges.
  • Manipulable into various shapes using a heat gun.
  • Glueable with contact glue or hot glue. This allows you build a thicker layer of foam by stapling layers on top of each other.

Patterns can be added to all our foams using wood burning tools. If you are interested in more details in regard to working with High Density EVA Foam, we highly recommend the EVA Foam tutorial books from Kamui Cosplay or joining one of our fun yet educational workshops.

Painting EVA Foam

Once you finish building your High Density EVA foam cosplay armor piece or prop, it is very important to seal and prime the foam before painting it with Amsterdam Acrylic Paint, for example. This can be done with a heat-sealing technique or by directly priming and sealing it in one go using our Flexbond, Hexflex or QuickSpray Primer. After heat sealing, any of our primers can be used. Once you have primed your piece primed, you can start painting your EVA Foam build using our paints such as our Amsterdam Acrylic Spray Paint.
